Here’s how to get your ‘unclaimed property’ from the state of Colorado

Believe it or not, many Coloradans don’t know that they’ve got money sitting around waiting to be claimed.

A long-running initiative from the Colorado State Treasury involves getting unclaimed property back to its rightful owner. Under a program of the department dubbed ‘Great Colorado Payback,’ the treasury is able to return lost and forgotten money, often related to things like unpaid wages, utility refunds, uncashed checks, and more.

While the program has returned more than $820 million in unclaimed property over the years, the program’s website notes that a list of more than 15.35 million individuals and businesses for whom property is available is maintained by the department.

Checking to see if you’ve got property to claim is pretty simple, as is claiming it. Start at the Colorado Department of the Treasury government website here.
