Denver police announce initiative to target drivers with expired plates

The Denver Police Department has announced a new initiative that aims to address an obviously rampant problem involving vehicles with expired plates and expired temporary tags operating on Mile High City roads.

According to the police department, a targeted enforcement effort is set to take place from November 15 through December 15, with local vehicle owners encouraged to get their vehicles properly registered now to avoid the possibility of getting pulled over and receiving a citation. The initiative comes in response to expressed community concern related to violations of this nature. This is set to be Denver Police Department’s fifth one-month enforcement period of this nature since July of 2024.

According to the Denver Police Department, those caught in violation of having expired plates face the possibility of a $95 fine on top of registration and renewal costs.

While registration of newly purchased vehicles must be done in-person, registration renewals can generally be completed online or at a Denver Motor Vehicle kiosk. Do so online here.

It’s also worth noting that while standard vehicle registrations have a 30-day grace period after expiration, temporary license plates do not.

Another aspect of the initiative that’s worth addressing is that during the enforcement period, the department will temporarily and partially suspend its policy related to low-level traffic stops, which include violations that don’t result in a major risk to public safety. For example, while speeders, reckless drivers, and those failing to use their turn signals will still be pulled over, deemphasized violations may include cracked windshields as long as the driver’s view isn’t blocked or having a single inoperable taillight.

A press release on the matter doesn’t address vehicles traveling without plates altogether, though these vehicles would presumably be targeted, as well, as drivers of these vehicles aren’t displaying valid proof of registration.
