Back in September of 2024, professional trail runner and The North Face-sponsored athlete Michelino Sunseri, now 33, used a portion of a prohibited trail during an attempt to set a record for the climb up and down 13,775-foot Grand Teton. He ended up breaking the record for the climb by about two minutes, but months of controversy would follow.

Soon after his feat, his record was pulled from the ‘fastest known time’ website, and later, he was found guilty of a misdemeanor related to his actions. The misdemeanor conviction had potential penalties of six months in jail and carried a potential fine of up to $5,000, and while jail time was said to be unlikely, legal proceedings were set to continue.

A key concern in Sunseri’s actions was that his travel on the prohibited trail might influence others to follow suit given his status in the running community – presumably a reason behind why authorities were taking the violation so seriously. Some relief did come with late-October 2025 reporting that indicated that a dismissal of the charge may occur if Sunseri completed 60 hours of community service and a course on wilderness stewardship, though a judge expressed concern about that shift, per AP reporting, with another hearing still set to take place on November 18.

On November 10, however, the saga of Sunseri’s legal proceedings took what most would consider to be an unlikely turn – President Donald Trump issued Sunseri a pardon, per AP. Sunseri’s attorney noted that there’s been bipartisan concern expressed about “over-criminalization” of minor offenses in national parks, and while The White House hasn’t released a comment on the pardon per AP, Trump’s decision may have been related to that.

Either way, it’s news that most following the case would likely find surprising. With the pardon, any crime that was committed is forgiven and any deal related to potential punishment would be moot.
