Aurora forecast intensifies for Wednesday night, likely indicating another colorful show in Colorado
In case you missed the big show from the Northern Lights above Colorado on Tuesday night, it’s looking like you’ll have another chance to catch a colorful sky.
A recent update from the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration indicates that the forecasted Kp score of the aurora for Wednesday night is now an ‘8’ of 9 – roughly what it was on Tuesday night. This is an upgrade from a Kp score of ‘6’ that was forecasted earlier in the day on Wednesday, indicating that the aurora will likely be seen above Colorado once again.
More importantly, updated mapping does show the viewing range of the aurora now dipping down into Northern Colorado opposed to central Wyoming – another indicator that Coloradans will likely get a show.
As many discovered last night, however, just because the aurora is set to be active, it doesn’t mean the same activity level will be present all night long. Thankfully, the Space Weather Prediction Center publishes a 30-minute forecast, which can be used to determine exactly when peak activity is expected to occur.
It’s also worth noting that Wednesday night may be the last really good opportunity to see the aurora this week if the forecast holds true and if cloud cover is absent. On Thursday night, the current Kp score is 4, with the view line hitting northern Wyoming.
