Bear breaks into Breckenridge vehicle, causing enough damage to set off airbags

“Bear season is not over yet,” reads the caption on a November 7 social media post from Breckenridge Police Department related to a recent wildlife-involved vehicle trespass incident.

According to the agency, a bear was discovered to be trapped in a vehicle in the area of Warrior’s Mark neighborhood, doing a significant amount of damage to the point that all airbags went off while the animal was still stuck inside.

Officers responded to the scene and decided that the safest way to get the bear out would be to break and window and clear the area. The rear driver’s side window was broken and as expected, the bear climbed out and went off into the night.

How the bear got into the vehicle is unknown, though it’s worth noting that bears can utilize door handles to gain access to spaces. Getting out tends to prove a bit trickier.

Generally, when a bear enters vehicle it’s in search of food, drawn to a vehicle by scented items. That might include leftovers, but can also include things like chapstick and sunblock.

This situation goes to show why it’s always important to keep vehicles and homes locked in bear country, as well as that while hibernation season (technically torpor season) is fast approaching, it’s not quite here yet. Coloradans shouldn’t let their guard down and should keep trash secure and keep spaces free of other possible bear attractants.
