“Not a harmless prank”: $10,000 in damage caused by person walking through wet cement in Colorado

Law enforcement in the Pagosa Springs area has launched an investigation into major damage that was caused during a local construction project with the Colorado Department of Transportation describing the act as a “costly setback.” The act? Someone walked through wet cement.

According to a report from CDOT, someone walked through freshly poured cement in front of Pagosa Springs’ Liberty Theatre and Galles Real Estate building on the night of November 11 to November 12, causing damages exceeding $10,000 in the process.

“Not cool,’ read a statement from CDOT on the matter. “Vandalism is not a harmless prank – it’s a costly setback.”

CDOT noted that the sidewalk was inside of an active construction zone and that whoever caused the damage jumped a safety barrier to do so. The sidewalk was covered with a protective tarp overnight and the impressions left behind by the alleged vandal were described as shoe prints in men’s size 11 to 12.

Law enforcement has asked the public for video footage that may help solve the case. According to CDOT, acts of vandalism on state property can result in “hefty fines, jail time, and restitution for the full cost of the damage.”

“Construction crews have been diligently pouring concrete for sidewalks and coordinating with local businesses for short-term closures to complete the work efficiently ahead of the busy Thanksgiving holiday,” read a statement from CDOT. “CDOT and its contractor appreciate the continued patience and cooperation of downtown businesses and the public as the project team works to safely complete this important improvement project.”

Anyone with information related to the situation can contact the Pagosa Springs Police Department.
