Popular scenic overlook in Boulder now inaccessible to drivers at night due to crime and safety concerns
A popular scenic area in Boulder is now going to be inaccessible to vehicle traffic at night as an attempt to address an ongoing issue with crime.
According to a press release from the City of Boulder, vehicle gates will be activated at the Panorama Point Trailhead each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to “support existing no-parking hours and to help deter illegal activity.” Those hiking or biking to the area will still be able to access the trailhead despite the vehicle closure.
Crime mentioned as problematic in the press release included illegal use of marijuana and alcohol, trespassing, and “other serious criminal activity,” said to have been increasing over time and to present concerns of safety. Additionally, concern about illegal activities impacting nature were expressed – an increased risk of fire, for example, as well as wildlife impacted by loud noises and large groups.
“City staff acknowledge how special a place like Panorama Point Trailhead is to many visitors who enjoy recreational opportunities like bouldering, cycling, hiking and admiring the scenic view.” reads the press release. “The updated protocol is to both improve visitor safety at night and improve the visitor experience for recreational opportunities and special events.”
The area will remain open as usual throughout the day.
