Man reportedly called 911 with claim of shooting someone outside of 300-resident mountain town in Colorado
A fatal mountain town shooting has led to an arrest in Park County.
At about 8:15 p.m. on November 10, the Park County Sheriff’s Office reports that Park County Communications received a 911 call from a man claiming that he had just shot someone outside of the 300-resident Town of Alma. Law enforcement officers arrived and attempted to save the life of 55-year-old Thomas Harker Jr., though those lifesaving measures were ultimately unsuccessful.
The suspect in the case, 35-year-old Benjamin Rector, was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder and is currently being held at Park County Jail without bond. His next court appearance is set to take place on December 1 at Fairplay’s Park County Combined court facility. This hearing will include the return filing of charges and serve as a bond hearing.
Information related to any sort of motive behind the alleged shooting has not been released, with Rector to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Alma is a small mountain town that frequent travelers of Hoosier Pass will likely be familiar with, located at an elevation of about 10,581 feet. In the winter, a lot of the traffic through the town consists of those headed to Breckenridge, while in the summer, it’s home to a turn-off to Kite Lake Trailhead, which is where most people start the popular DeCaLiBron fourteener route that travels Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross – among four of the most heavily-trafficked fourteeners in the state.
All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty and all charges are merely accusations.
