13 places to go ice skating in Colorado this winter
As the winter season makes its way into Colorado, it’s the perfect time to participate in a classic cold weather activity – ice skating.
Here’s a list of several popular ice skating rinks you’ll find around Colorado:
- Keystone Lake Ice Rink
Considered one of the best ice rinks in Colorado, this is a large, Zamboni-maintained outdoor rink located at Keystone Resort. The rink is five acres, and the Keystone Adventure Center offers ice skate rentals, training assistant stand rentals, child pull sled rentals, hockey stick rentals, and hockey puck rentals. Visiting this spot is the perfect way to fill in the time between laps on the mountain.
2. Evergreen Lake
This rink is located in Evergreen and it’s known as the world’s largest Zamboni-groomed outdoor ice rinks. The rink offers a picturesque setting for general skating and hockey.
3. Beaver Creek Ice Rink
Located at the base of Beaver Creek Mountain, this ice rink is located in a stunning mountain town setting, surrounded by the shops and restaurants of Beaver Creek Village. The rink also includes amenities like fire pits, and if you’re around the area at 3 p.m. you might even get some free chocolate chip cookies.
4. World Arena Ice Hall
Located in Colorado Springs, this is one of the finest training facilities in the world, as it is home to Olympic and NHL- sized rinks and dozens of world-class figure skaters and coaches. Find more information about the rinks here.
5. Family Sports Ice Arena
This rink is the practice facility for the Colorado Avalanche and offers public skating and many other programs for skaters of different levels.
6. Edge Ice Arena
This recreational and family skating arena includes public skating, learn to skate, figure skating, stick and puck and learn to play hockey programs.
7. Rotary Park
Ouray’s Rotary Park transforms into a ice rink in the winter, surrounded by the stunning mountains. Locals occasionally stop by the rink for impromptu hockey or broomball games. The rink does include a small warming hut (plus the Ouray Hot Springs is only about one mile away if you need to warm up more or soak your muscles after a skate).
8. Acacia Park
Skate in the Park is hosted at Acacia Park in downtown Colorado Springs and includes special theme days hosted by the event’s sponsors. Events include “Magenta Day” hosted by TFiber, opportunities to skate with Colorado College Tiger Hockey team, skate with D11 Hockey, and Learn to Skate with U.S. Figure Skating.
9. Crested Butte Nordic Center
Crested Butte owns and operates an ice skating rink located adjacent to the Nordic Center. The Nordic Center staffs the warming house and rents ice skates for guests to use on the public rink. Crested Butte also schedules open skate times and hockey programs at the rink.
10. YMCA of the Rockies
The YMCA of the Rockies offers outdoor ice skating among the surrounding stunning Rocky Mountain National Park’s snow-covered mountains.
11. Winter Park Resort
Winter Park’s ice skating rink offers great views of the peaks of the Continental Divide at the outdoor village pond (located in the heart of the Village at Winter Park).
12. Lake City
Head to Colorado’s second largest natural lake, Lake San Cristobal, for ice skating in stunning, classic Colorado scenery. However, it’s important to note that ice skating at Lake San Cristobal is weather dependent and you should always check ice before skating.
13. Vail
Visitors of Vail will find two options for outdoor ice skating this winter – Arrabelle Square Ice Rink and Solaris Plaza Skating.
