“He’s gonna get killed”: Man arrested for allegedly traveling 100 MPH with 2-year-old son unsecured in backseat
A shocking traffic stop took place in Adams County in recent days, involving a driver getting pulled over after allegedly weaving in and out of traffic at 100 miles per hour. The kicker? Police say the driver’s two-year-old son was in the backseat and not strapped into his car seat at the time.
According to the Commerce City Police Department, the situation unfolded December 1 on Highway 2. Footage from the scene shows that the initial traffic stop took place around 11 a.m.
In police body camera footage, an officer is shown approaching the driver-side door of the vehicle, soon to address the driver.
“I logged you at 81 after you slammed on your brakes,” says the police officer. “You have a kid with you. What’s going to happen when you crash going 100 miles per hour? He’s gonna get killed. Is that your son? Do you want your son to get killed because you’re driving recklessly?”
The driver of the vehicle was arrested and his vehicle was towed. According to a press release on the matter, he faces changes of reckless driving, speeding 40 or more over the limit, and child abuse.
“Don’t. Do. It. Here. If you aren’t prioritizing your child’s well-being, you better believe that we are,” stated the police department following the incident.
In Colorado, children age eight or younger must be restrained in a car seat during travel (additional rules apply and can be found here).
All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law and all charges are merely accusations.
