Search for killer continues 8 years after 17-year-old found dead in mountain town home

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation remains hopeful that the case of Maggie Long’s homicide could one day be solved with the help of the public, with various parties offering a combined reward of $75,000 for information that leads to an arrest in her killing.

Eight years ago, on December 1, 2017, 17-year-old Maggie Long was found dead in her burned home near Bailey, Colorado. The home was determined to have been burglarized before it was set on fire, with stolen items including guns (a Beretta handgun and an AK-47-style rifle), 2,000 rounds of ammunition, jade figurines, and a safe. It’s believed that more than one person was involved in the crime.

The FBI released the following composites of suspects in the case:

Per the FBI report on the matter, a 911 call was received involving a report that people were inside of the home and causing damage with at least one unknown male said to be on the property. Maggie’s body was found by fire personnel after the blaze was extinguished, with a physical altercation believed to have taken place between Maggie and her assailants prior to the start of the fire.

The horrific incident unfolded after Maggie left school to drive home before a concert that took place later that night. Her family wasn’t home, but a tenant who rented a unit at the property was, later cleared as a suspect.

Per previous Colorado Public Radio reporting on Maggie’s death, the motive remains unknown.

“It could have been because she stumbled upon a burglary in progress,” reads a 2022 article written by Elaine Tassy. “It could have been because she was Asian – the Longs, Chinese-Vietnamese immigrants who came to the US 40 years before, were one of few Asian families in the area.”

Maggie’s family owned several Chinese restaurants and was involved in real estate.

“We believe someone knows something that could help solve this case and bring a measure of justice to Maggie’s family and the Bailey community,” said Park County Sheriff Tom McGraw. “It could take just one person to help our investigation and we are determined to bring a resolution to one of Colorado’s most high-profile cold cases.”

Anyone with information related to the described crimes and Maggie Long’s death is asked to contact the Maggie Long Task Force at 303-239-4243. Tipsters can remain anonymous.

Bailey is an unincorporated community in Park County with a population of about 10,000 residents. It’s located in a mountainous part of the state that’s rural and rugged.

Many stories have been written about Maggie Long’s death over the years, as each year, the anniversary of the day rolls around, stoking public interest in the case and prompting authorities to ask the public for any potential tips that may lead to an arrest.
