Up to 24″ of additional snow could hit parts of Colorado as wintery week continues

It’s been a snowy Wednesday in Colorado, with significant travel impacts seen around the state and more fresh powder expected throughout the day. And according to the National Weather Service, some parts of the state could see 18 to 24 additional inches from the morning of December 3 through Saturday at 5 a.m.

In the ‘expected’ snowfall scenario, which has an 80% chance of coming to fruition, southern and southwest Colorado get hit the hardest, as well as northern Colorado’s Park Range near Steamboat Springs. Both of these areas should have peaks that get snow in the range of 12 to 18 inches through Saturday morning, with the potential for up to 24 inches in some parts of the Sangre de Cristo range.

Meanwhile, the ‘high-end’ snowfall scenario – with a 10% chance of coming to fruition, shows these deeper totals being even more widespread, adding the central mountain region to the list of spots that gets hit hard.

In both scenarios, snow is falling on both I-25 and I-70, thus travel impacts can be expected. In the ‘high-end’ snowfall scenario, some parts of I-25 could get snow in the range of 12 to 18 inches through Saturday morning.

See both scenarios depicted on the maps below – first, the ‘expected’ scenario and then keep scrolling to see the ‘high-end’ snowfall forecast:

Thus far, the highest snowfall accumulation for a developed area is being reported in the area of Rocky Flats on the northwest side of the Denver metro, which has gotten about eight inches. Many parts of the Front Range have gotten between four and seven inches as of Wednesday morning at about 9:00 a.m.

As of 12 a.m. on December 3, the statewide snowpack sits at about 48 percent of the norm. Expect a sizable jump come tomorrow’s report though, as most of the snow that’s fallen came after midnight.
