Wildlife officers relocate 200-pound bear hibernating under deck

Officers with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) relocated a 200-pound black bear that was found hibernating under the deck of a home in Colorado Springs on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

According to an X post from CPW, the sow (estimated at three years old) was temporarily immobilized and placed in a wildlife trailer. The bear was then given a “wake-up” drug and released into better habitat west of Pikes Peak.

CPW noted that access to attractants like bird seed, pet food, and trash can stop bears from finding a den in the wild where they enter torpor, the animals’ natural winter hibernation-like state.
