Denver diners tip the highest among those in major U.S. cities – and it’s more than 20% on average
While at least one survey has shown that 90 percent of Americans think tipping culture “has gotten out of control,” voluntarily adding to the bill for a meal or service remains a customary act in the United States. Granted, how much that tip might be can vary greatly – roughly 57% of Americans say they’ll tip 15% for the average meal at a sit-down restaurant while some claim that if service is as expected, 20% is the minimum that a tip should be.
A recent report on how tipping amounts can vary by location that was published by Food & Wine pins Denver as being home to the people who tip the most nationwide.
According to that report, Denverites tipped an average of 21.18% from the start of the year through August 1, 2025 – the highest among all major cities included in the ranking.
While Denver is home to the ‘most generous tippers’ nationwide, locals are also spending less while eating out – something that could ultimately impact the take-home pay of those in the restaurant industry. According to a Denverite report from this fall, Mile High City locals spent 6.7 percent less eating out this past September compared to the same month of the year prior – the sharpest decline among 20 of the largest American cities.
A key reason behind the drop in dining out could be inflation related to this expenditure. Colorado Public Radio reported in June of 2025 that the price of restaurant meals in Denver had increased five percent year-over-year. This increase in price might have more people opting to cook at home.
Either way, Denverites are some of the best tippers nationwide. Find a full breakdown here.
