Missing snowboarder found after taking shelter at survival cabin near Montana ski resort
A snowboarder who had gone missing on Christmas Day at a ski resort in Montana was found safe after taking shelter in a survival cabin on the backside of Big Mountain.
According to reporting from Daily Inter Lake and information from North Valley Search and Rescue, the 18-year-old snowboarder went missing on Dec. 25. North Valley and Flathead County Search and Rescue responded to search Whitefish Mountain Resort, including the frontside and backside slopes and out-of-bounds terrain.
The search and rescue teams found footprints going towards a rescue cabin and the snowboarder was found at 8:40 p.m. warming up by a fire. The snowboarder was taken back to his family at 10 p.m.
North Valley Search and Rescue said he did the right thing by “hunkering down and waiting for help to arrive.”
Although this incident took place in Montana, it still serves as a good reminder and example for outdoor recreationists adventuring in Colorado’s backcountry.
