Driver allegedly assaulted by man and juvenile after striking and killing dog in Colorado

Two people, including a juvenile, are facing assault charges for events that allegedly transpired following a driver striking and killing a dog that ran onto a road in Weld County on January 3.

According to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, the driver hit the dog on Weld County Road 45 at about 3:46 p.m. The driver then parked his vehicle to inform and apologize to the owners. At that point, the 38-year-old suspect confronted the driver, along with a juvenile male.

The two suspects reportedly approached the male while screaming, with the older suspect being the dog’s owner. Both suspects then allegedly assaulted the driver while claiming that the driver owed them money for the dog. One or both suspects then allegedly attempted to take the driver’s watch. The juvenile suspect allegedly then started going through the man’s vehicle in search of something of value, with the 38-year-old suspect reportedly damaging the driver’s exterior car mirror.

The driver was eventually able to leave the scene and drove to the Hudson Police Department to report the incident. At that point, the driver was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-serious bodily injuries.

According to the driver, he was unable to swerve or slow down when the dog was struck.

Deputies have already made contact with both suspects.

The 38-year-old suspect was arrested and faces the following charges:

  • Criminal attempt to commit a class four felony
  • Third degree assault
  • Criminal mischief (under $300 in damages)
  • First degree criminal trespass
  • First degree contributing to the delinquency of a minor

The juvenile was contacted by law enforcement, too, though the press release on the matter did not state he was arrested. The juvenile faces the following charges:

  • Robbery
  • Criminal attempt to commit a class four felony
  • Third degree assault-causes bodily injury
  • First degree criminal trespass on a motor vehicle

All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. All charges are merely accusations.
