Experienced mountain climber dead after falling 100s of feet on Colorado peak
A male hiker died in Colorado on New Year’s Eve after falling 100s of feet from 13,295-foot Citadel Peak, which is about 2.5 miles north of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial tunnels along I-70.
Alpine Rescue Team was called into the field for the fall at about 2:05 p.m. on December 31, with a ‘page code 3’ – a code used for life-threatening situations.
According to CBS, the man had taken a fall of 100s of feet from the peak while climbing with a 29-year-old female. The woman was the one to report the incident, with good cell reception present in the area.
Winds impacted the initial aerial response, resulting in much of the mission taking place after dark. The woman’s safety was a key concern, as she was still stuck on the mountain in a position described as “precarious.”
Eventually, the aerial effort was a successful, lowering rescue personnel into the field to reach both the man and woman. The man showed no signs of life. The woman and the man’s body were off the mountain by around 8 p.m.
The CBS report on the matter indicates that the pair was experienced and prepared, in rocks and not snow at the time of the fall. There was no indication provided regarding what resulted in the man’s fatal plunge from the peak.
