Out-of-state driver allegedly caught at 106 mph in 55 mph zone
An out-of-state driver was clocked driving at 106 mph in a 55 mph zone in Custer County on Tuesday morning.
According to a post from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy clocked the 20-year-old driver from Tulsa, Oklahoma going 106 mph in a posted 55 mph zone on Highway 69 near the airport. The car also had three other “young passengers” in it.
The fine at this speed is $1,000 and the offense carries 12 points on a driver’s license, the sheriff’s office said. This is enough for an automatic suspension of at least three months and up to a year.
The driver will return to Custer County for court, the sheriff’s office said.
“Driving at 106 mph anywhere is reckless, but it’s especially dangerous here,” the sheriff’s office wrote in the post. “Our mountain highways are narrow, winding, and lack shoulders, with steep drop-offs that leave no room for error. We’re grateful this incident ended safely, but it’s a reminder that excessive speed can have tragic consequences. Please slow down and drive responsibly – your safety, and everyone else’s, depends on it.”
