Colorado town of 900 has 2 breweries, while city of 62K has none
It’s no secret that Colorado loves its craft beer – and an annual report recently published by Colorado Brewery List provides the data that supports that claim.
According to Colorado Brewery List’s end-of-year report for 2025, there were 423 open brewery locations in the Centennial State as of December 31 – 340 original breweries, 42 additional locations, and 41 taprooms without brewing operations. In addition to those spots, the state was also home to 18 cideries and 20 meaderies.
As far as location goes, 38.2 percent of the state’s breweries are located in the Denver metro area – given that this part of the state makes up about half of the state’s population, that’s not much of a surprise. In total, Colorado Brewery List reports that Denver County is home to 70 brewery locations, followed by 48 in Larimer County, 40 in Boulder County, and 39 in El Paso County.
One of the more interesting statistics included in the Colorado Brewery List report touched on how many different cities and towns are home to at least one brewery location – 114, including four towns where the population is less than 200 residents. Also noteworthy is that Ouray is home to two breweries (Ouray Brewery and Ourayle House Brewery) that are separated by about 450 feet on Main Street despite its population being about 900. To put that in perspective, Colorado has about 10.3 breweries per 100,000 residents – if Ouray had 100,000 people and the same rate of breweries its got now, it would have 222 breweries.
It’s also worth noting that there are some big gaps in terms of places without a brewery – Otero County, with a population of 18,703 and no where to drink locally brewed craft beer. Commerce City also lacks a brewery per the Colorado Brewery List report and its got a population of 62,287.
The full report from Colorado Brewery List features a ton more information on where Colorado’s craft breweries are located.
