Iconic Colorado park closed to vehicle traffic after city gets 12-plus inches of snow

UPDATE: Roads have been reopened.

Big snow fell in Colorado Springs last night, with some local residents reporting a foot of fresh powder or more. As might be expected, that much snow had an impact on navigating the city.

One spot in particular that was impacted was the city’s most iconic park – Garden of the Gods. The winter storm that blew through loaded plenty of snow onto roads, resulting in the decision from Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services to shut the park down to vehicle traffic until safer conditions are present.

Crews are working to clear the roads on Friday and it sounds like those living locally who are able to walk into the park can still do so. That said, Garden of the Gods is a park the mostly requires driving for out-of-town visitors. Key features are a main driving loop that shows off the sights of the park, with many of the destination’s parking lots located off of this main road.

If you were planning to visit Garden of the Gods today, it’s probably best to postpone your trip. It’s likely the park will be fully operational by Saturday considering past examples, though no estimated time for the road to reopen was released.

Garden of the Gods is often listed among the best free public parks to visit in the country, known for its stunning red rock formations and a backdrop of a mountainous scene. It’s located on the west side of Colorado Springs.
