Dangerous winds overturn semis, close highways, and prompt ‘blowing dust’ warning in Colorado
Winds have been gusting on Friday in Colorado, and they’ve been causing problems when it comes to traveling around the state, particularly on the Eastern Plains.
A 12:14 p.m. update from Colorado State Patrol noted that I-70 was under a ‘high wind restriction’ from Deer Trail to the Kansas state line after multiple vehicles overturned. High-profile vehicles were barred from travel on the stretch as a result.
Mapping from the Colorado Department of Transportation shows that this isn’t the only road that’s impacted, either, with a portion of I-25 between Colorado Highway 1 and the Wyoming State line under a full closure, along with a northern Colorado stretch of US 85, an eastern portion of US 34, and an eastern portion of US 24.
The map below provides a good look at where wind-related issues have been present – mostly in eastern and northern Colorado:

According to the National Weather Service, peak gusts in impacted areas should reach around 65 to 75 miles per hour. High wind warnings were activated across much of the Eastern Plains region. A ‘blowing dust’ warning was activated, as well (find more specific alert information here).
Winds are expected to taper off as Friday progresses, with most wind-related weather warnings expiring around 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Road conditions, alerts, and closures are subject to rapid change. Find additional information here.
