Semi-truck driver arrested after being accused of starting fire with sparks from truck
A semi-truck driver was arrested and is facing charges related to a wildland fire that was allegedly started by sparks his truck was letting off on Friday.
According to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was successfully contained and fully extinguished within the boundaries of Interstate 76, Highway 59, County Road 18, and County Road 19. The sheriff’s office also said that “due to the swift response and effective coordination of all involved, no structures were damaged or lost, and no injuries were reported.”
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said that after the fire was contained, they received a tip with video footage of a semi-truck driving eastbound on Interstate 76 near mile marker 165 while dragging the lowered landing gear of the trailer, which were producing sparks that ignited the prairie fire.
The semi-truck was located parked on the eastbound Julesburg on-ramp near mile marker 180. The driver was charged in connection with setting fire to the prairie. The semi-truck and trailer were impounded as evidence.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said it “extends its sincere appreciation to all agencies, firefighters, dispatchers, medical personnel, and community members who assisted in this incident.”
