Second slopesport death of month reported at Colorado resort

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating another winter slopesport death that occurred at Keystone Resort – the second this month.

According to the sheriff’s office, a snowboarder died at the resort on January 19 related to a crash that occurred on Lower Go Devil, described as a black diamond run near the resort’s Mountain House base area. The report about the crash was received by law enforcement at about 2:11 p.m., with CPR underway in attempt to revive the snowboarder at that time.

The snowboarder was with his friends at the time of the crash, which involved hitting the snow with force. The snowboarder was wearing a helmet at the time, and at this point in the investigation, no trees, blunt objects, or other people are believed to have been involved in the fatal incident.

Following the crash, one of the snowboarder’s friends contacted Keystone Ski Patrol who responded to provide medical care, ultimately transporting him to the Keystone Medical Center. Once at the medical center, he was pronounced deceased.

Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons expressed condolences, saying, “Every loss of life on our ski slopes is deeply felt in our community. We extend our sincere condolences to the snowboarder’s loved ones during this difficult time.”

The identity of the snowboarder will be released by the Summit County coroner at a later date, along with the official cause and manner of death.

This death follows one that took place at Keystone Resort on January 7 involving a skier. In that case, a 59-year-old male was found unresponsive on a black diamond run called The Grizz in the resort’s Outback area.
