On Thursday afternoon, Colorado State Patrol released an update related to a fatal crash involving a CDOT snowplow, a sprinter van carrying members of a California hockey team, and two passenger vehicles that took place on I-70 around 8:53 a.m. earlier that day.

The crash occurred just east of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel complex, resulting in the death of the driver of the van and the hospitalization of eight others of the 10 occupants onboard. A total of four juveniles and three adults were transported from the scene via ambulance, with another juvenile flown to a trauma center via helicopter. Following the crash, eastbound I-70 was closed at Silverthorne, though this route appears to have since been reopened per the CoTrip map.

At about 3:30 p.m., Colorado State Patrol released the findings of a preliminary investigation into the crash. According to their report, evidence indicates that the CDOT plow truck was traveling westbound on I-70 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. At that point, the plow traveled through the median, breaking a cable rail and ending up in eastbound lanes. The plow then struck a Toyota Tacoma that was traveling eastbound, resulting in the Toyota going through the median and striking a westbound BMW in westbound lanes.

After striking the Toyota, the plow is believed to have continued eastbound, striking the eastbound sprinter van. Upon impact, the van traveled down an embankment with the plow coming to rest on the shoulder of the road. Images from the scene appear to show that the sprinter van landed on its side.

Per an update from Denver Health, all four juveniles that were being treated under the hospital’s care have been discharged. Three adults are still being treated – two in serious condition and one in fair condition. An update related to the juvenile individual who was initially reported to be transported from the scene to an unidentified trauma center via helicopter has not been released. At this point, only one related death has been confirmed – that of the van’s driver. At last report, no injuries were sustained by those in the aforementioned BMW or Toyota.

Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit’s investigation into the crash is set to continue.
