11 family-friendly things to do in Estes Park this winter

Known as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), Estes Park is a unique, charming Colorado destination. Serving as a great basecamp for outdoor adventure, the town is a great place to introduce kids to the outdoors, and have other activities that are more relaxing.

Here are five activities that the whole family will be sure to love:

  1. Go sledding

Check out Hidden Valley Sledding Hill in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). The area has a warming hut and plenty of room to play in the snow.

2. Go ice skating at the YMCA of the Rockies

Skate among the mountain views at YMCA of the Rockies’ outdoor rink.

3. Go on an easy snowshoe adventure

Rent some snowshoes in Este Park and explore some easy, scenic winter trails. Sprague Lake and Bear Lake loop are great beginner options.

4. Explore the downtown area

Take a walk in the charming downtown area, where you can explore the shops and even warm up with some hot chocolate at places like Kind Coffee or Inkwell & Brew.

5. Do some winter wildlife watching

Drive or walk around the town in search of elk herds or mule deer. You might even find them in nearby meadows. Kids will love seeing the creatures. Make sure to keep a safe distance from wildlife, or stay in your car, and be respectful of Colorado’s wildlife.

This event typically occurs in April. The festival celebrates all things “squatchy,” and features a big slide, indoor climbing wall, film screenings and more.
