IDs of those involved in fatal I-70 crash involving girl’s hockey team released
Colorado State Patrol has provided another update related to the deadly crash that involved a snow plow and a van carrying members of a girl’s hockey team that took place on I-70 on the morning of January 29.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the crash was the result of the driver of a snow plow losing control of the vehicle just east of the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnel complex, with the westbound plow ultimately crossing into eastbound lanes. In addition to the van – now described as a Ford Transit van by officials opposed to a sprinter van – two other passengers vehicles were involved, a Toyota Tacoma and a BMW X1.
With eight injuries reported – all sustained among those in the van – a Thursday report indicated that four injured juveniles had been released from medical care, and that two adults remained in serious condition with another in fair condition. Details related to an eighth individual who was initially report to have been airlifted from the scene don’t appear to have been released. The only confirmed death related to the incident remains the driver of the van.
In the latest update, the plow driver was identified as 29-year-old Colton A. Weidman of Littleton, with the driver of the Tacoma being Daniel J. Eckert of Silverthorne and the driver of the BMW being Roland C. Balkenede of Denver. A 65-year-old female passenger was in the Tacoma, as well.
The Denver Gazette reports that the driver of the van who was killed was 38-year-old Manuel Alejandro Lorenzana-Villegas, a father of one of the hockey players on board. The hockey team involved in the crash was the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers, of California, who played through the tragedy to win the Western Girls Hockey League championship on February 1.
The crash remains under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit at this time.
