Olympic Games kickoff sparks Downtown Winter Fest in Colorado Springs
The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum will open its doors Saturday for a free celebration tied to the kickoff of the Olympic Games in Milan, Italy.
Downtown Winter Fest will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering free admission to the museum and a full slate of family-friendly activities.
Organized by Colorado Springs Sports Corp., the festival invites residents and visitors alike to celebrate Olympic City USA. Nastia Liukin, winner of five medals in gymnastics (including gold in the all-around competition) at the 2008 Games in Beijing, and four-time Paralympian and alpine skier Danelle Umstead will be the featured guests.
Festivities include athlete meet-and-greets, live music, a Homestead Circus Productions performance, museum exploration, a torch relay and a cauldron lighting.
Guests can also enjoy free horse carriage rides, a ninja obstacle course and s’mores at outdoor firepits, as well as food and drink from local vendors.
While the festival concludes at 3 p.m., the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum, 200 S. Sierra Madre St., will remain open until 5 p.m., with the final entry at 4 p.m., giving visitors extra time to explore the exhibits.
