There’s something comforting about a great meal at a classic American diner, and according to Business Insider, Colorado’s best-of-the-best diner is located in Denver.

A piece published by Business Insider on February 4 sought to highlight which diner was the best in each American state. When it came to Colorado, the top pick was Sam’s No. 3.

In business since 1927, Sam’s No. 3 has long been a Denver staple, said to serve around 3,900 people on the average weekend day. The spot was started by Greek immigrant Efstathios Armatas, who first came to America in 1910 and then returned illegally in 1924 by jumping ship in the New York Harbor and swimming to shore. Presumably in attempt to stay undetected, Armatas adopted the name Sam Andrews. According to a report from the Denver Gazette, federal agents captured Armatas as an illegal immigrant and brought him in front of a judge in 1936. The judge, however – described as an ‘adoring customer’ – released Armatas into his own custody, and Sam’s No. 3 lived on (find a full dive into the history of Sam’s No. 3 from Seth Boster here).

Sam’s No. 3 has gone through plenty of changes in the decades that followed, but the local love for the brand has stuck around.

With two locations – one on Denver’s Curtis Street and another on Cherry Street in Glendale, customers can’t get enough of the old school vibes. The menu has grown to be notably large, though the high ratings of the spot that can be found online seem to indicate that it’s hard to go wrong. From a wide variety of omelets to eggs Benedict to potato stackers to burgers to burritos – with options for a Greek twist found throughout the offerings – there’s no shortage of items to try at Sam’s No. 3.

The mention in the Business Insider report wasn’t the first time Sam’s No. 3 has gotten media attention, either. Over the years, the restaurant has been covered numerous times, even at one point being dubbed one of the 50 best places to eat in Denver by Yelp.
