Skier injured by debris in Colorado backcountry
A backcountry skier was injured after taking a wire to the neck, according to Silverton Medical Rescue.
The incident highlights the danger Colorado’s low snowpack poses, as debris in the backcountry becomes more exposed than normal years.
According to SMR, the patient encountered a wire to the neck while skiing in backcountry areas of San Juan County that usually would have been covered with snow in normal snow years.
“We write to warn our followers and friends on the mountain that debris, posts, wires, and other trash is far more exposed this year than other years,” SMR wrote in a Facebook post. “Be safe and keep a keen eye out for things other than rocks and trunks. Danger looks different every year, and low avalanche risk does not equal low risk overall.”
The incident serves as an important remined for skiers to keep an eye out for dangers that are not usually present at this time of year.
