8 tips for spring skiing in Colorado
Spring skiing offers, arguably, some of Colorado’s most entertaining and exciting runs of the year. With slushy snow and sunny skies, the spring means plenty of fun if you know how to adapt to the warming conditions.
Here are some tips to make the most out of the end of ski season:
- Avoid icy mornings and slushy afternoons
Prime skiing time during the spring is usually between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. This allows the sun time to soften up icy and crusty snow in the early morning and gives skiers a chance to get their runs in before the sun turns the snow into piles of slush on the mountain. Plus, prioritizing mid-day hours might mean missing some of the crowd while they’re off eating lunch.
2. Choose the right terrain
Start your ski day out on east/south-facing runs that are sunny and groomed. Then, follow the sun to north-facing runs as the day continues.
3. Wear layers
Colorado weather is notoriously unpredictable, so make sure to layer up. Mornings can be cold but skiers certainly work up a sweat, especially in warmer spring temperatures. So be sure to wear layers that you can shed according to the weather.
4. Make sure your gear is in good condition
Get your skis waxed for wetter conditions to prevent sticking on springtime snow. It will also make for a better and faster ride through the slushy snow.
5. Watch out for hazards
As the snowpack melts, more hazards and debris will start to pop up across the slopes. Be careful to watch for more rocks, roots, tree stumps, and other unexpected hazards.
6. Wear sunscreen and goggles
The UV rays are powerful at the high elevation of many Colorado resorts, so it’s important to protect your skin and eyes (especially during the spring sunshine). It can be tempting to remove gear as they day warms up, but don’t forget to put the sunblock on, too.
7. Don’t skip the quirky spring events and apres-ski activities
From deck parties in ski boots to cardboard sled races and pond skimming, Colorado resorts throw a variety of exciting events to celebrate the spring season.
8. Use your ‘rock skis’
If you have multiple pairs of skis, use the older ones to avoid damaging your skis that are in better condition.
