CU Boulder quarterback dies in late-night crash in area of local reservoir
On March 1, University of Colorado Boulder quarterback Dominiq Ponder, 23, was killed in an automobile crash that took place near one of the largest reservoirs in Boulder County.
Per a report from Colorado State Patrol, preliminary evidence points to Ponder losing control of a 2023 Tesla Model 3 while traveling westbound on Baseline Road at about 3 a.m. Ponder was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The crash occurred in the area of Newland Court on a right-hand curve, with this location being roughly where Baseline Lake Swim Club is located. Evidence is said to point to the Telsa traveling across eastbound lanes before striking a guardrail, traveling through that guardrail and striking an electric pole before rolling down an embankment. The vehicle landed on its wheels and caught fire.

Ponder was pronounced deceased at the scene, with authorities noting that preliminary evidence seems to indicate that speed may have been a factor in the crash.
This crash occurred in close proximity of Baseline Reservoir and Baseline Lake Swim Club, which is a members-only recreation organization on the northeast edge of the lake that’s been in the area for more than 50 years. This is a highly exclusive club that currently has a wait list of about eight to 10 years to join, per the Baseline Lake Swim Club website. In addition to having a member capacity of 125, membership is limited to homeowners on 25 roads – about 275 households being eligible to join.
While Baseline Lake, also known as Baseline Reservoir, is private-access, it’s noteworthy as one of the largest reservoirs in the Boulder area.
Per the Colorado Buffaloes website, Ponder played in two games during the 2025 season, taking the three final snaps at quarterback in the team’s home game against Arizona. He also contributed in three snaps on kickoff the following week. Ponder’s hometown was Opa Locka, Florida, with the team noting he was a Sophomore at the time of his death.
Ponder’s death has been mourned by friends and family, as well as fans of the team. Head Coach Deion Sanders posted the following tribute on social media:
“God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & Loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you’re receiving a good 1. Comfort us Lord Comfort us.”
