25-year-old man dies after “serious accident” on Steamboat slopes
Per local reporting from Steamboat Radio’s Shannon Lukens, a local resident died after an incident on the slopes of Steamboat Resort on Saturday, March 21. The incident took place near Buddy’s Run, involving 25-year-old Jack McGrath, a member of Ski Butlers team.
Buddy’s Run is described by the resort as “a quintessential Steamboat blue” – with steepness at the start and end and flowing terrain in the middle. It’s surrounded by treed terrain, which may have been where this incident occurred based on local reporting that indicates it took place “off” of the run. Specific details of the incident have not been released by the resort aside from that a “serious accident” took place.
Following Jack’s death, there’s been an outpour of community support expressed online.
Steamboat Resort has had a rough year in terms of snowpack, as has been the case statewide in Colorado. The resort is set to close on April 12 at this time, ahead of its April 20 closure in 2025. At time of reporting, 72 percent of the mountain’s runs remained open –131 of 183. Live cameras from the mountain show an obvious lack of snow in the general area of the resort, outside of maintained runs.
Condolences go out to those impacted by Jack’s tragic death.
