19 injured in 70-vehicle pile-up crash on Colorado’s I-70
Following the chaos of an Eisenhower tunnel-area pile-up crash that involved an estimated 70 vehicles traveling I-70 East on April 14, all related closures have been lifted.
While initial reports indicated 75 to 78 vehicles were involved, an update from Colorado State Patrol has adjusted this total to “approximately 70.” Information related to injuries sustained by those on the road at the time has also been clarified to indicate that 19 people were evaluated on-scene for injuries, 11 of whom declined transportation and eight of whom were transported to hospital care. One of the eight people who was transported to a hospital had sustained what were described as serious bodily injuries. At this time, there have still been no related deaths reported.
In addition to the crash in eastbound lanes, westbound lanes were briefly closed at the Eisenhower tunnel due to a incident involving a pick-up truck and a jackknifed trailer.
The pile-up crash occurred amid snowy conditions. Mapping from the NOAA shows that about four to six inches of snow fell in the area of the Eisenhower tunnel over the 24 hours surrounding the crash. While the official cause of the crash has not been announced, slick conditions may presumably have been a factor.
The crash remains under investigation by Colorado State Patrol.
