Stunning scenic drive just opened for the season in Colorado – but you’ll need the right vehicle to tackle it

One of the state’s most stunning mountain drives has officially opened for the season following a winter closure.

Per an update from Visit Telluride, Last Dollar Road is good to go with wintery conditions no longer present. Connecting the Ridgway area to Telluride, this dirt road is known for its stretching views of peaks and mountain valleys, as well as aspen groves. Driving it does require a four-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance and an OnX Offroad rating of 4, but for those with the right ride, traveling it is a can’t miss-summer experience.

Per Visit Telluride, the route stretches 13.3 miles long with about 3,061 feet of elevation gain. In addition to being a great spot for off-highway driving, it’s popular among campers and photographers for its unobstructed views of Sneffels Mountain Range and Wilson Peak.

For those in Ridgway, travel 12 miles west from Ridgway to Telluride on Highway 145 and look for a turn-off on the left that reads “Last Dollar Road.” Following five miles on gravel, drivers turn left and stay on Last Dollar Road and Road 58P. Meanwhile, those looking for the road while traveling out of Telluride should head down the Highway 145 spur and take a right on Last Dollar Road, with the right found just before the roundabout that splits 145 on the way out of town.
