Medical emergency occurs at popular roadside castle in Colorado

At about 11:30 a.m. on May 18, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office reported that a medical emergency had taken place at Bishop Castle, a popular roadside attraction near Rye, Colorado.

Not much information on the matter was released, though it was noted that there was an expected closure on Highway 165 around mile marker 13 for the sake of a medical helicopter needing to land in the area.

Per the Colorado Department of Transportation CoTrip travel map, no closure was present on the roadway at time of publishing (2:15 p.m.).

Details regarding what type of medical emergency was underway were not released.

Bishop Castle is one of the state’s most popular roadside attractions – a massive one-man construction project that stretches more than 150 feet into the air. It was created by Jim Bishop, who passed away at the age of 80 in 2024.
