Climber rescued after 1,000 foot fall on peak in Colorado
An injured climber was rescued in the Bell Cord Couloir on Maroon Peak after falling 1,000 feet and sustaining non life threatening injuries on Friday.
According to a Facebook post from Mountain Rescue Aspen (MRA), the Pitkin County Regional Emergency Dispatch Center got a report of the injured climber at about 8:36 a.m. on Friday. The climber had fallen approximately 1,000 feet while climbing the Bell Cord snowfield.
Two field teams of 11 members were deployed to conduct a technical rescue in steep snow terrain. They arrived at the trailhead at about 9:50 a.m. and began hiking to the subject’s location about three miles from the trailhead.
At 12:20 p.m., the rescuers made contact with the subject, conducted a medical assessment, and stabilized injuries. They began lowering the subject down the snowfield through technical terrain, arriving back at the trailhead at approximately 3:10 p.m. Rescuers were out of the field by 3:40 p.m. The subject declined further medical care.
The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office reminds climbers and hikers to prepare for potential injuries in technical terrain, dress appropriately for changing mountain conditions, bring technical gear appropriate for the route, and carry a two-way satellite communication device.
