2-year-old girl fighting for life after getting bitten twice by rattlesnake in rural Colorado
A two-year-old is fighting for her life after getting bitten by a rattlesnake in rural Colorado.
According to a report from KDVR, the girl’s family was visiting the state from Kansas for a wedding. The girl was bitten in the yard of the family’s Bennett-area Airbnb hours after arriving this past Monday when her mother had taken her outside to see nearby horses. Following the encounter with the snake, the girl started to lose consciousness and had difficulty breathing, ultimately flown to a children’s hospital in Aurora for care.
A GoFundMe that’s been set up to help support the girl’s fight to survive notes that she was bitten twice on her thigh. She has already had a blood transfusion and over 30 vials of anti-venom.
Per the most recent update on the GoFundMe, the girl’s condition seems to be improving – “things are looking better and we can breath a sigh of relief,” read the update. While the full extent of the damage reportedly remains unknown with very deep tissue damage present, the young girl is reportedly alert enough to interact with her cousins.
This situation serves as a scary reminder that rattlesnakes are present in Colorado and can be found lurking in unexpected places. While rattlesnakes will often utilize their rattle warning when they’re feeling threatened, that’s not always the case. It’s also worth noting that rattlesnakes aren’t just found in wild spaces, but can be found in residential yards, too. Taller grass and brush can be places where they tend to be.
While not all rattlesnake bites deliver venom, anytime a rattlesnake bites someone, it should be considered a medical emergency. Seek medical care immediately.
