6 wildfires to know about that started this week in Colorado

Wildfire season is in full swing as multiple blazes are burning around the state of Colorado. Thankfully, none of the active fires seem to be threatening local residents at time of reporting, though as every Coloradan knows, fire news can change fast.

Here’s a look at six fires you should know about:

  1. Beehive Fire

Location: north of Paradox in Montrose County

Size: 320 acres

Containment: 0 percent

Details/Update: Started June 8 after a lightning storm moved through on June 7. No structures threatened. Difficult fight in rugged terrain relying heavily on aerial resources for suppression amid dangerous fire conditions.

2. Paradox Trail Fire:

Location: west of Montrose, near the western edge of Uncompahgre National Forest

Size: 52 acres

Containment: 20 percent

Details/Update: Burning near the Beehive Fire and also started on June 8 by lightning that moved through on June 7. It’s remained active over the past 24 hours but without recent significant growth.

3. Bear Fire

Location: Burning near Highway 350 between Trinidad and La Junta

Size: 150 acres

Containment: 0 percent

Details/Update: After starting on June 10, the fire was initially described as “fast moving,” but appears to have since slowed down. Evacuations were put in place, but were lifted around 2:30 p.m. on June 11. That said, residents were told to remain vigilant and to look for updates in case fire behavior changes.

4. Spring Creek Fire

Location: Southern Eagle County, near Thomasville and Ruedi Reservoir

Size: 20 acres

Containment: No information provided

Details/Update: Fire activity is expected to ramp up on Thursday afternoon, though there has been no recent growth. Evacuation order in place, see map here.

5. Paradise Creek Fire

Location: western Glenwood Springs, near I-70.

Size: About five acres

Containment: 100 percent

Details/Update: While this fire initially closed both directions of I-70 when it sparked on June 9, it was contained and no further impacts are expected.

6. Rifle Fire

Location: Started at a Rifle apartment building in the area of the 100 block of Willow Creek Circle, then spread to surrounding wildland

Size: About 3 acres

Containment: No specific information provided, but it seems to be fully contained based on other progress reports

Details/Update: Initially reported as a backyard fire threatening a residence, Colorado River Fire Rescue responded to this blaze at about 4 p.m. on June 10. The fight against it was a success, but not before it spread to surrounding wildland and resulted in significant destruction to an 8-unit apartment building. Read more here.
