Man rescued after being stuck in 15-foot trench

A man was rescued on Saturday night after being trapped at the bottom of a 15-foot trench in Wheat Ridge for possibly nearly 24 hours.

The West Metro Fire Department said in an X post that a passerby heard the man calling for help in a construction zone near N. Crossing Drive and Clear Creek Drive. The passerby got the attention of an RTD driver who called 911.

West Metro crews and the department’s technical rescue team responded around 9:30 p.m. and found the man stuck in a narrow hole, injured and lying in mud and water. The fire department said that it’s believed that he might have been there for nearly 24 hours, unable to get anyone’s attention.

Two firefighters climbed down a ladder to assess the man’s injuries and prepare him for rescue. He was secured in a stokes basket, and lifted to the surface using a rope system. He was then taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
