Colorado’s first arcade bar closes after 15 years – but something big is on the way

After 15 years, Colorado’s first arcade bar has closed its doors – but the spot’s story is far from over.

Per a recent announcement, The 1up Arcade Bar located on Blake Street in Denver is now shuttered. That said, the company’s Colfax, Greenwood Village, and Westminster locations are still going strong. That’s not all either – with the announcement of the LoDo location’s closure, the company also announced that they’ll be opening a new location that will be their largest yet.

“When we opened on March 23, 2011, we had no idea what this little experiment would become,” read the closure announcement from the company. “What started as a passion project built around classic arcade games, pinball machines, craft beer, and a love for gaming grew into something far larger than we ever imagined.”

As noted by the company, The 1up Arcade Bar on Blake Street wasn’t just a bar, but a place for community. From hosting internationally recognized Donkey Kong tournaments to gaming leagues to first dates, countless people created fond memories at the spot.

While the location has weathered many storms, the company cited the changing conditions in downtown Denver and increasing financial pressures facing the hospitality industry as factors in the decision to close.

There’s good news for fans though. This fall, a new The 1up Arcade Bar location will be opening in Lakewood’s Belmar Shopping District, taking over space formerly occupied by Lucky Strike. At 13,000 square feet, this will become the largest The 1up Arcade Bar location and will feature the company’s most extensive collection of games.

“While the address may be changing, the heart of The 1up remains exactly the same,” reads the announcement. “To every guest who supported us, every employee who poured their energy into making this place special, every league member, tournament player, industry partner, vendor, and friend who walked through our doors over the last fifteen years: thank you.”
