Grass fire sparks near Denver airport, grows to over 200 acres

A grass fire started by a car crash grew to over 200 acres near Denver International Airport on Saturday.

According to Brighton Fire Rescue, firefighters responded to a vehicle crash near East 120th Avenue and North Watkins Mile Road at about 2 p.m. Nobody inside the vehicle was seriously hurt, but the crash did spark the fast-moving grass fire north of 120th Avenue.

According to reporting from 9 News, the car’s catalytic converter set fire to the grass. The fire burned about 237 acres before it was contained at around 3:30 p.m.

Brighton Fire Rescue said that crews used engines, brush trucks and water tenders to work on the fire.

The Hudson Fire Protection District and South Adams County Fire Department also responded to assist.
