Lightning that struck golfer started wildfire at Colorado course

A golfer was hospitalized after getting struck by lightning at Lakewood’s Fox Hollow Golf Course on June 30.

According to West Metro Fire Rescue, their team responded to the scene just before 6 p.m. after the golfer was struck by the lightning and injured near the course’s 6th hole. After the strike, a lightning-caused wildfire started, as well, with the lightning igniting part of the course’s ‘rough.’ It started to burn in a pocket of dead, dry grass and downed trees, but was quickly contained at about two acres without threatening any of the course’s structures.

Once the fire was contained, an infrared-equipped drone was used to detect hidden pockets of heat in a move that helped to further extinguish the blaze and prevent future flare ups. West Metro Fire Rescue did note that those in the area may still see smoke rising from the burned area on July 1 as lingering hot spots get hit with daytime heat.
