In case you missed it, some major flooding took place in Telluride on Friday afternoon, with water and mud filling a local theater.

According to a report from the Telluride Fire Protection District, the Palm Theater, which is located on the northwest edge of town, was filled with approximately three to four feet of standing water and mud due to multiple mudslides that took place in the area of the Jud Wiebe Trail between Butcher Creek and Cornet Creek around 3:30 p.m. While most of the theater’s exterior doors were able to withstand the force of the flooding, a loading dock door was damaged and allowed the floodwater and mud to enter the space.

Telluride Intermediate School also flooded, though not quite as bad, with several classrooms and hallways filling with approximately five to six inches of water and mud.

Fire personnel arrived just after 5:30 p.m. to assess the scene for safety concerns, structural instability, gas leaks, electrical hazards, and other potential threats. At last report, no injuries occurred.

“While we almost exclusively respond to fire and EMS-related emergencies, every once in a while we’re called to something rare like this flood,” said Telluride Fire Protection District Chief John Bennett. “No matter the nature of the incident, our priority is always taking care of our community.”
