The Flagstaff House offers a unique dining experience atop Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder, as guests can enjoy stunning views through the window-encased restaurant as they eat.
Perched 6,000 feet up on the side of Flagstaff Mountain, the restaurant is only a five-minute drive from downtown Boulder.
Originally constructed in 1929 by Chicago schoolteacher Hattie Bilchert, the building began as a summer cabin. In 1937, park ranger Joe Van Gorder acquired the property and transformed it into a venue for hosting special events. The building changed hands once again in 1954 when the Buelkes family bought it. They named it “The Flagstaff House,” turning it into the “elegant summer restaurant” it is today.
Don Monette bought the restaurant on November 1, 1971. According to the restaurant, the Monette family “greatly expanded the property, weatherized it to be open year-round, and added several outdoor terraces which allow diners to enjoy the changing season atop Flagstaff Mountain.”
According to Boulder, the Flagstaff House has earned 41 consecutive Forbes Travel Guide Four Star ratings and AAA Four Diamond status for 30 years.
Yelp reviewers rave about the restaurant’s views, service, and food. One reviewer writes “Obviously the view is spectacular. Arriving for an early dinner, we were able to see the city of Boulder transition into nighttime with a near full-mooning as backdrop. Gorgeous.”
The restaurant carries a high 4.7-star rating on Google Reviews.
