The Fern Lake Trail is a moderately difficult, 7.8-mile round-trip hike in Rocky Mountain National Park that passes waterfalls, offers spectacular views, and ends at shimmering Fern Lake below the Continental Divide. Wildlife, including deer, elk, and black bear, are often seen along the trail. Start at the 8,155-foot Fern Lake Trailhead on the western edge of Moraine Park and follow the Big Thompson River up a glaciated canyon for 1.7 miles to the Pool where the river and Fern Creek meet. Continue up Fern Lake Trail for another 2.2 miles past 60-foot Fern Falls to a final steep stretch to the lake nestled below 12,129-foot Notchtop Mountain, Little Matterhorn, and The Gable. After catching your breath and enjoying the view, return 3.9 miles the same way to the trailhead.
