Things To Do

The Fern Lake Trail is a moderately difficult, 7.8-mile round-trip hike in Rocky Mountain National Park that passes waterfalls, offers spectacular views, and ends at shimmering Fern Lake below the Continental Divide. Wildlife, including deer, elk, and black bear, are often seen along the trail. Start at the 8,155-foot Fern Lake Trailhead on the western edge of Moraine Park and follow the Big Thompson River up a glaciated canyon for 1.7 miles to the Pool where the river and Fern Creek meet. Continue up Fern Lake Trail for another 2.2 miles past 60-foot Fern Falls to a final steep stretch to the lake nestled below 12,129-foot Notchtop Mountain, Little Matterhorn, and The Gable. After catching your breath and enjoying the view, return 3.9 miles the same way to the trailhead.

Pro Tips

  • The Fern Lake Trail begins at the 8,155-foot trailhead on the west side of Moraine Park and ends at 9,503-foot Fern Lake, gaining 1,348 feet in elevation. The round-trip hike totals 7.8 miles out-and-back on the trail. It’s a strenuous hike that gains most of its elevation in the last 1.3 miles to the lake. The first 1.7-mile section to the Pool makes a great easy hike for families with small children, elderly folks, and visitors coming from a lower elevation. Allow four to five hours to do the entire hike.
  • Parking at popular trailheads like the Fern Lake Trailhead is limited, usually in summer and on autumn weekends. Get there early to grab one of the 15 to 20 parking spots at the lot at the end of Fern Lake Road. An overflow lot is to the east. Don’t park along the narrow road; you’ll be ticketed by rangers.
  • The best way to reach the trailhead is to park at a Park & Ride lot and take a free shuttle bus to the Fern Lake Bus Station trailhead and walk an easy 0.8 miles to the trailhead.
  • After you reach Fern Lake, hike to the outlet on the northeast side of the lake to find the best mountain views. From Fern Lake you can extend your hike by following the Odessa Lake Trail for another 0.7 miles to the lake, another 480 feet higher and similar in size and shape to Fern Lake.
  • Recommended season(s): Year-round.
