This building in Waterville was known as the tabernacle when the photo was taken in August 1913. Traveling evangelists used the large structure for their services and at the time of the photo, the Union Evangelistic Campaign conducted daily services. The building later housed machinery and tools and was located behind Jess Implement and Mires’ Machinery Repair Shop.

100 years ago

The Douglas Record has just changed hands and is now known as the Douglas County Record.

Waterville wants water. Negotiations are under way to obtain water from the McGinnis ranch, known by old-timers as the Platt Corbaley place. While no offer has yet been made, it is expected that the city will soon submit an officer to Mr. McGinnis to tap into his supply which is said to be sufficient to serve the town.

50 years ago

Judges Felix Rea and B.J. McLean of Douglas County Superior Court today announced the appointment of Oliver K. Burns as juvenile probation officer.

Douglas County has become “the capital” of the Washington State Cow Belles Association, as three of the organization’s top officers for 1960 are from here. They are Mrs. Vanira Gimlin, president; Mrs. Bob Johnson, secretary; and Mrs. Hugh Gormley, treasurer.

25 years ago

Former Rock Island resident Laurence Schooler recently participated in a promotional television commercial for the U.S. Army. Schooler is stationed at Fort Knox, Ky., where he is with the 6th Cavalry.
