A growing ‘conspiracy’: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo welcomes 3 lemur pups
There is a growing conspiracy at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, according to a Monday news release.
In animal parlance, a “conspiracy” is a group of lemurs, and the zoo recently welcomed a trio of ring-tailed lemur pups to its Water’s Edge Africa landscape.
The pups, who have not yet been named, were born on March 20 to two different mothers, Allagash and Rogue. However, during a chasing incident, Rogue was separated from her offspring and rejected the baby when staff members tried to reunite them. Since then, Allagash, 12, has cared for her sister’s pup as well as her own, zoo officials said.
Rogue, who apparently lives up to her name, has been kept separate from the rest of the lemur group since the chasing incident, according to the release. For now, she interacts with the conspiracy through a mesh barrier. Staff members have witnessed calm interactions between Rogue and the rest of the group, and hope to be able to reunite them in the future.
The babies spend most of their time clinging to Allagash, either nursing or climbing all over her, staff members said. But they are growing curious about their surroundings, and are beginning to explore.
“The babies are quite active while climbing on Allagash, which makes her kind of like a lemur jungle gym for the little ones,” said animal keeper Michael Barnas. “While two are nursing, the other rides on her back, and they rotate positions to nurse.”
Lemur conspiracies are matriarchal, or female-dominated, and at Lemur Island, Allagash is the leading lady. Typically, the lead lemur’s offspring are second in the hierarchy, followed by any other females. Males occupy the bottom rung of the social ladder.
This means that while Hercules, the adult male of Lemur Island, has sired all three of the new pups, he has little influence on their upbringing.
The sexes of the pups have yet to be identified, and staff members are not in a rush to name them, the release stated.
