What to do on New Year’s Day around Colorado Springs

Family in town still on New Year’s Day and in need of activities? We got you covered.

There’s a variety of activities and events on Colorado Springs this New Year’s Day that will be sure to keep your friends and family entertained.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo is predicting sunny weather with a of 47 degrees, perfect for those looking to experience the outdoors.

Wesley Hermann, a park ranger with the city of Colorado Springs recommended that that New Year’s Day would be a great day to check out a new trail or hike in the area.

At the top of Hermann’s list this New Year’s Day is the trails at Red Rock Canyon, which finished major alterations to many of its trails in November. With good weather expected for New Year’s Day, Hermann said checking out one of the many new or altered trails may be a great way to begin the new year.

Of the trails at Red Rock Canyon, Hermann said that the Red Rock Canyon Overlook trail is his current favorite.

Some other areas that Hermann recommends on New Year’s Day are Ute Valley Park,  Stratton Open Space and for those interested in birdwatching, Bluestem Prairie.

“It’s a great time to come out and visit some of our trails and outdoor spaces,” Hermann said.

For those who have already been to Garden of the Gods, Hermann recommends potentially steering clear on New Year’s Day as he anticipates larger crowds than usual for the holiday.

Another great way to spend your New Year’s Day outdoors is participating in the El Paso County Search and Rescue’s Rescue Run.

The Rescue Run is a 5k or 10k run by the El Paso County Search and Rescue every year since 1979, with all proceeds of the $35 entrance fee going to the El Paso County Search and Rescue organization. The Rescue Run takes place along the trails at Bear Creek Park East, with the starting location at the Norris-Penrose Events Center.

For those not looking to run or hike, there are still plentiful options in the area on New Year’s Day.
