Colorado Rapids introduce new coach Chris Armas
The Colorado Rapids on Thursday introduced new coach Chris Armas, who shows two decades of MLS experience as a player and coach.
“I’m thrilled and can’t wait to get started,” Armas said on the team’s website.
Armas won the 1998 MLS Cup during a 12-year playing career split between the LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire FC. He was also a six-time MLS All-Star and part of four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup-winning teams. He’s one of only five players to be named to the MLS Best XI in five seasons.
Armas, who was introduced Thursday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, earned 66 caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team as a defensive midfielder.
“The foundation for a Chris Armas team is hard work,” Armas said. “Before we talk any soccer tactic or principle of play it’s team-first and togetherness. So if you talk about a Chris Armas team — from what I’ve done and what I’ll have the ability to do here — it’s hard work, togetherness and team-first.”
As a coach, Armas has worked with Chicago Fire FC, the Adelphi University women’s program, New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC and in the English Premier League with Manchester United and Leeds United.
Armas joins a Rapids franchise in need of a reboot. Colorado finished last season 5-17-12 and with 27 points, last in the Western Conference and second-to-last in MLS.
