Colorado’s Travis Hunter named 2024 Heisman Trophy winner

NEW YORK — Travis Hunter, Heisman Trophy winner.

Colorado’s two-way star added the most prestigious award in college football to his resume Saturday night. The Buffaloes standout won the Heisman, beating out finalists Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

As soon as he heard his name announced as the winner, Hunter leaned forward and his head sank down.

“I was just thanking God the whole time,” Hunter said.

Hunter becomes the second CU player to win the award, joining the late Rashaan Salaam, who won it 30 years ago. The Buffs program also joins an elite group as the 20th school with multiple Heisman winners.

The Florida kid who admitted he originally wasn’t thrilled about the idea of moving to the mountains was now putting Buffalo horns up by his head and after wiping away tears, yelling “Sko Buffs!” in front of his Heisman Trophy.

But everyone knows Hunter wouldn’t have been representing Colorado without Deion Sanders. Hunter has said he would’ve followed Coach Prime — the person who believed in his ability to be a game-changer the most — anywhere.

“ I thank him so much for changing my life forever,” Hunter said.

It’s the culmination of a week of hardware for Hunter, who has won so many awards that CU will need to do some rearranging of Legacy Hall in the football facilities. In addition to the Heisman, Hunter was named the Associated Press and Walter Camp Player of the Year. He also won the Bednarik Award (defensive player of the year), Biletnikoff Award (top wide receiver), Paul Hornung Award (most versatile player) and the Lott IMPACT Trophy (top defensive player).

“I’ve definitely thought about what (Legacy Hall) is gonna look like over the last two days,” Hunter said. “I walked past it (Thursday) and I was like, ‘Dang, it’s gonna look pretty different. I’m gonna be all over the hallways.’ They’re probably gonna paint a picture of me in there. I’ve definitely thought about it. I can’t wait to see how it’s gonna look.”

Hunter is the first defensive player to win the Heisman since Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson won in 1997. Woodson also played snaps on offense and was his team’s primary punt returner, but Hunter has redefined what it means to be a two-way player during his three seasons of college football.

Playing over 110 snaps per game combined between offense and defense, Hunter has racked up 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns on offense to go with four interceptions and 11 pass breakups defensively, becoming the first player in history to win individual awards on both sides of the ball.

“It starts with your mindset,” Hunter said. “If you believe you can do it, then you’ll be able to do it.”

The group of Heisman winners that Hunter is now a part of includes many players he looked up to as a kid, including fellow Palm Beach County native, Lamar Jackson.

“I grew up watching him,” Hunter said. “I remember going to his high school games and seeing him dominate.”

Now, Hunter will head back to Boulder to get ready to play in his final college game. Even now as a Heisman winner and a likely top five pick in next year’s NFL draft, he’s not wavering from his decision to play in CU’s Alamo Bowl appearance against BYU on Dec. 28.

“It’s gonna make my teammates go out and play harder,” Hunter said. “They helped me get this trophy, so why not go out there and help them? It’s gonna be a very special game, very special moment.”

But first, Hunter is going to celebrate with the many family, friends and teammates who made the trip to New York to be with him.

“I don’t like to be out late, but I’m gonna be out late tonight,” he said with a laugh.
